Winfall Village, Winfall, NC

At the request of the Northeast Community Development Corporation and the Black Family Land Trust, I teamed with GM Frech & Associates on a mixed-income site design in a small and predominantly black community near Edenton, NC. The geometric wagonwheel layout on the left, done by a previous firm, focused the open space on a barren semi-circle of land in the middle of the site, eliminated the best trees on the property (shown in dark green), and failed to integrate the new open space with the existing town park to the east. After walking the site with the developer, local officials, and representatives of several nonprofits to identify the finest trees, we convened to the Town Offices to design a layout in a collaborative and consensual manner. Our redesign, on the right, saved the most significant trees and extended the adjacent parkland open space into the heart of the new neighborhood (instead of walling it off with several lines of new houselots as the original plan had proposed). The new plan also eliminated several street lengths in this alley-loaded development by fronting a number of houselots directly onto the open space. Other project sponsors included the Conservation Trust for North Carolina and the North Carolina Community Development Initiative.
