Regional District of Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, BC: This pair of graphics shows how the street-and-block plan on the top right fits into the Green Infrastructure Map on the top left, like a hand in a glove. After walking and analyzing the site’s opportunities and constraints, potential conservation areas were mapped and shown to Village residents at a large public gathering, where the planning direction was favorably received.
At the next meeting the street and block layout (without distracting lot lines) was presented, again with a positive reception, accompanied by a slideshow illustrating how the various neighborhood open spaces would be designed, including boulevards, small squares, “attached greens” (with one side bordered directly by alley-loaded houselots, having no street in-between), and “greenway streets” consisting of two sidewalks along front lot lines, separated by a linear green planted with shade trees on both sides (which works well for occasional cross-street situations where lots can be accessed from the rear, as illustrated in the details below). Note also, in the lower-right image, that a larger number of homes enjoy water views because they are not lined up parallel to the shoreline, instead being arranged to give some lots diagonal views of the sound across the open space.
The yellow patch on the Green Infrastructure Map marks the location of the proposed village center, convenient to the main entry street and the rail line.
The largest open space, comprising an extensive network of walking trails crossing several hundred acres designated for the new underground community drainfields on the other side to the main island highway, farthest from the water, is not shown here.
